Leadership
John Matey, Senior Pastor

Born In/Grew Up In: born in Canton, OH / grew up in Seattle, WA
Went To College At: Trinity Baptist College
Family: My beautiful wife Colleen and my four children Trey, Michael, Marie, and Steven
Favorite Restaurant: Outback, Razzoo’s, and who doesn’t love Taco Bell?!
Favorite Books: anything John McArthur, the Hidden Smile of God (John Piper), Christian fiction based upon historical facts and/or Biblical eschatology, and “How to Deal with Unruly Staff” (author unknown)

Favorite TV Shows: American Idol, LOST, The O’Reilly Factor
Favorite Movies: Rambo: First Blood and Princess Bride (they should sell those in a two-pack); Glory, Shawshank Redemption, all the Rocky’s (except “V” and “Rocky Balboa”), NOT the Notebook (that Colleen and I have watched several times and love it) because it’s a girly movie and the staff would never let me live that down, Braveheart, and all three Bourne movies
Best Advice: (for Yankees moving South): Remember, “Y’all” is singular. “All y’all” is plural. “All y’all’s” is plural possessive.
Favorite Quote: “In the Year of our Lord 1314 , patriots of Scotland- starving and outnumbered- charged the fields of Bannockburn.  They fought like warrior poets; they fought like Scotsmen…and won their freedom.” Sir William Wallace / “Trees cause more pollution than automobiles.” and any other of the great Ronald Reagan quotes / “Do not look to your hope, but to Christ, the source of your hope.” C.H. Spurgeon / “Just as the sinner’s despair of any hope from himself is the first prerequisite of a sound conversion, so the loss of all confidence in himself is the first essential in the believer’s growth in grace.” A.W. Pink
Favorite Bible Passage: Psalm 119:63 my “life verse” that I chose the first time I had my personal devotions as a little kid: “I am a companion of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts.”  / Revelation 22:20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

Favorite Movies: Princess Bride, Braveheart, Dead Poets Society, Hoosiers, Dirty Dancing (okay, no, not really…just figure that if you’re taking the time to read this about me, I should make it interesting.)

Best Advice: “Be where you are.” / “A good thing, if it’s not the best thing, can be a bad thing.” / “Don’t eat the yellow snow.” / “You really don’t look good with your head shaved.” / “Good enough, never is.”

Favorite Quote: “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” – John Piper / “To have found God and still to pursue Him is the soul's paradox of love, scorned indeed by the too-easily- satisfied religionist, but justified in happy experience by the children of the burning heart.” – A. W. Tozer / “Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” – C. S. Lewis

Favorite Bible Passage: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31 / “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” – Psalm 16:11 / “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4:23-24
